I've worked from home since the birth of my first

I've worked from home since the birth of my first son 18 years ago. While that was a choice to be home with my son while still making money, I've since continued working from home for 14 years because of necessity. Because I'm chronically ill.

I have no choice other than to work a flexible job from my home. I'm too sick to work full-time outside of the home - or even part-time for that matter.

I'm grateful that I'm able to flex my skills, experience, and creative muscle in this way but I do mourn what could have been.

Even within the remote field, I'm limited due to my chronic illnesses, specifically chronic fatigue, and yet, I've been able to have a successful work-at-home career and for that I am thankful.

I do think about the younger people with chronic illness and what they miss out on, and how hard it is for them to do college, and any kind of work. My heart hurts for them. I know how hard it is but I, at least, got to experience my youth with full health.

I want you to know that there is hope for a career even if you're sick. If you can't work outside the home, there are many options inside the home.

While it's sometimes a consolation prize to take your career home - working remotely is an option for those of us who need it, or in some cases, want it.

Working from home has its pluses, don't get me wrong. It's a wonderful option for those of us who can even work in that way. But, it's okay to mourn a traditional job if that was your dream in life.

It's a website specifically for chronically ill, and differently-abled, folks who want to work. They specialize in remote and flex jobs, connecting job seekers with companies who are happy to employ us.

If you're chronically ill, do you work? If you do, is it at home or outside the home? If you don't and want to, what kind of jobs interest you?

We are capable of working and we have skills. Our bodies may limit us but we are valuable, working or not.

You are valuable and important. Don't ever forget that.

We finally have a small break in the dangerous tri

We finally have a small break in the dangerous triple-digit heat that's been hovering over Texas for weeks. It's only 89 right now and the high tomorrow is only to be 87! Although it won't last long, I'm so grateful for the predicted two-day break from the heat. (not to mention my AC will be thankful not to be running nonstop!)

Hard times are going to happen. It is part of life

Hard times are going to happen. It is part of life. It is part of the human experience. Unfortunately, no one can live the entirety of their life without experiencing some hardship.

I wish this wasn’t how it had to be. I wish this wasn’t the reality of the human experience as we know it. But it is.

This is personally how I get through the hard times in my life. And I realize that how I get through hard times may not be how you do and that is OK. I’m just simply sharing what works for me. And I hope that I can help some of you.

1| I keep my heavenly perspective knowing this won’t be the only life I live. This belief and way of thinking has given me the gift of joy in the pain. It’s through Jesus that I’m able to carry that level of peace and perspective even when the world feels like it’s falling apart around me.

2| a resilient spirit keeps me moving forward. When through walking seasons of pain I’m keenly aware that though life tries to knock me down it won’t keep me down. I have the ability to stand back up and keep fighting for joy, for love, and for my peace.

3| and lastly, the joy I find in the small, simple, good moments keeps me finding the good in the bad which powers me through.

I want to acknowledge that I do grieve, I do get frustrated and angry, and I do get tired. I just choose not to stay in those places for too long. If I can rise out of the dark places that can come along with hardship and hard seasons then I do.

Some days I can rise out of those dark places quickly while others I have a harder time coming out of. That is also natural, don’t beat yourself up if you stay in a dark place longer than you would like.

Full transparency, I’m also medicated for clinical depression and although that helps to a degree the tips I mentioned above are what powers me through on the daily. I use both medication and perspective, resilience, and joy in the small to carry me onward.

What are some ways you slow down like nature and e

What are some ways you slow down like nature and embrace peace, calm, and patience?

Here are some ideas that work for me:

1. Wake up slowly and gently.

Yes, during the school year I have to set an alarm but I choose to allow myself a good 30 minutes to awaken after the alarm goes off. Time to come out of my slumber and be grateful for another day.

2. Start the day off with gratitude

Whether that looks like pulling out your gratitude journal and jotting down a couple things you are thankful for or whether it just means speaking to God about your gratitude, always start the day with a grateful heart.

3. Take a walk

Whether you enjoy speed walking for the heart-pumping effects or a slower walk to just get your body moving, what I suggest in either situation is to look around when you're walking and soak in the nature around you. Even if you're in the city, notice any trees that are around, listen to the birds, and feel the breeze. Really be intentional in being aware of the world around you.

4. Pick up a slow hobby

Find yourself a slower hobby and enjoy it daily. Whether it's reading a book or picking up some cross-stitching, maybe knitting, or even a puzzle. Enjoy how it forces you to slow down, be in the moment, and exercise patience.
